Celebrities are the bread and butter of your typical hard-working Cannes Film Festival paparazzo, you can find them on the red carpet, getting into and out of limousines and of course, losing their balance onboard opulent superyachts.
But who likes to party where? Will I find Prince Mohammed bin Fahd al Saud rubbing shoulders with Kim Kardashian on board his epic superyacht, Montkaj? Or will Kanye West be snapped riding a jet ski from Bernard Arnault’s massive luxury vessel Symphony’s tender garage and crash the party?
The Cannes Film Festival sees its fair share of wild deck parties, celebrities like Megan Markle, Priyanka Chopra and Hailey Bieber (nee Baldwin) are all known to have attended onboard superyachts functions with the super rich.
Let’s take a look at some of the more well-known celebrities at Cannes and the yachts they have chosen for their foray into film festival boating over the years.
Emily Ratakjkowski, Hailey Baldwin and Bella Hadid – Ecstasea
Topping the list of celebrities at Cannes is three of the world’s most famous models and influencers were caught on social media getting frisky aboard super yacht Ecstasea at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, needless to say there are plenty of people who would give their left arm to have attended the party.
The $ 170 million, 86-meter yacht was built in 2004 by preeminent Dutch ship builder Feadship and is currently owned by Belgian entrepreneur Alshair Fiyaz. A regular sight in the waters of the French Riviera, it can comfortably accommodate 14 guests with a crew of 24 to see to the guests’ every need.
Reserved for the ludicrously wealthy, the vessel’s annual running costs are approximately A $ 14-28 million per year and there is an onboard massage room, gym, sauna, several indoor and outdoor bars and even a steam room.
Refitted in 2009, it has a helipad, huge tender garage full of the usual water toys and is flagged in Bermuda.
Lindsey Lohan – Chakra
The Mean Girls star and regular Cannes celebrity attendee was spotted on the 1963 built superyacht Chakra and allegedly tried to use the galley to cook Mediterranean food for other guests.
The actress was based in London and Dubai at the time and wore a floral Christophe Guillarme gown on the Cannes red carpet that year. She posted #happyramadan on Instagram, having allegedly converted to Islam, although this rumor is not confirmed.
The ocean brings me a sense of peace and calmness and I am totally obsessed with boats and being on the water so this was the perfect choice for this holiday and to celebrate Ramadan.
The Chakra can be chartered for A $ 704,310 a week and is also up for sale. Undergoing major refits in 2016 and 2017, it was originally used as a North Atlantic weather ship before being converted into a superyacht in 1998. If you would like to purchase Chakra outright it will set you back A $ 85.37 million.
Leonardo DiCaprio and David Geffen – Rising Sun.
There was no forbidden love and unfortunately not as many steamy encounters in vintage cars when Leonardo Di Caprio stayed aboard the 138 meter Luursen superyacht, Rising Sun, owned by his pal, Hollywood studio exec David Geffen back in 2015. The luxe yacht was built in 2004, refitted in 2011 and is a regular attendee at Cannes.
The huge vessel is a favorite of various Cannes attending celebrities and many of them have stayed aboard the yacht including Bruce Springsteen, Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, JJ Abrams, Martin Short, Jen Meyer, and Sir Paul McCartney.
Leonardo was spotted on the yacht canoodling with a mystery blonde that year, possibly sports illustrated model and short term flame Kelly Rohrbach, it was a tumultuous few years for the Titanic star’s love life, him and Barbadian billionaire Rhianna reportedly had a night in a Paris club and attended Coachella that year together.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Geffen chose to isolate aboard Rising Sun in the Caribbean Grenadine Islands, suffering bravely while being waited on by the ship’s 30 plus crew members, it is unclear if any of these crew members tested positive to covid.
Kendall Jenner and Tommy Hilfiger – Flag
In 2019, Kendall Jenner was spotted in a teeny weeny polka dot bikini aboard the 62 meter super yacht Flag, built in 2000 by distinguished Dutch shipyard Feadship. The recently single Keeping up with the Kardashians star had just ended her romance with Aussie basketball player Ben Simmons and appeared to be enjoying her new status.
She enjoyed a jet ski ride in the blue waters of the Med before stepping back aboard the superyacht appearing to struggle with the cold water of the onboard shower.
The superyacht she stayed on, Flag, is owned by none other than American Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, it features a spacious sun deck for hiding from the paparazzi and a large onboard pool. We can not picture the onboard dining facilities actually being used much much by slender Jenner, but the dish does feature a pizza oven and BBQ, the onboard bar was probably more popular.
Leonardo Di Caprio – Lionheart
Leo is a regular Cannes celebrity attendee and often has a film in contention for one of its prestigious awards, he was snapped in 2013 surrounded by a bevy of babes aboard 64m luxury superyacht Lionheart, owned by Topshop mogul and billionaire Sir Philip Green.
Lionheart was built in 2006 by Benetti and can sleep 12 people comfortably in its opulent cabins, it has now been renamed Lioness V after Sir Phillip decided to build another bigger Lionheart in 2016. Lioness V is available to charter for A $ 605,000 and as well as jet skis, the huge yacht includes waterskis, a Kite Surfer, scuba diving equipment, a seabob, wakeboards and much more in its garage.
Leo had recently made the American period drama the Great Gatsby with legendary Australian director Baz Luhrmann, starring opposite British leading lady Carey Mulligan. He was spotted sunning himself on the foredeck of Lionheart surrounded by as many as 6 stunning women, the actor started dating German model and actress Toni Garrn later that year but she was no where to be seen in the Cannes Marina.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie – Tatoosh
Remember Brangelina? The once Hollywood power couple were the hottest pairing since JFK and Jackie Onassis and were a staple of gossip rags and tabloids worldwide for many years back in the naughties. While expecting twins Knox and Vivienne in 2008, the celebrity couple took an extended break in Cannes aboard late Microsoft founder Paul Allen’s super yacht, Tatoosh.
In town for the Cannes Film Festival, they jumped aboard the luxury vessel for a cruise of the Med whilst house hunting for a property in the south of France, they were joined by their adopted children, Maddox, six, and Pax, four. Tatoosh is a massive 92 meters long and has an impressive archive of voyages, having cruised to some of the world’s most remote and exotic locations while those onboard took advantage of its deluxe amenities.
The striking vessel has two helicopter pads, large tenders, a swimming pool, beach club, elevator, and an onboard cinema for celebrity passengers to indulge in. It is for sale for just over A $ 135 million. Tatoosh’s owner at the time, Paul Allen was a big fan of building gargantuan superyachts and for a while his famed 126 meter superyacht Octopus was the largest ever produced.
