Montgomery Central catcher named Player of the Week after hitting .727 in postseason play

CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Montgomery Central catcher Eric Owen has been named Clarksville Now Player of the Week for his play during the week of May 16. The Indians have now had two players named as Player of the Week during the 2022 season.

Montgomery Central is the only baseball team in the county remaining in the postseason. The team went 2-1 during the week, and both wins came in elimination games. A multitude of players stepped up for the Indians this past week, and this includes the team’s catcher.

Owen began the week going 2 for 5 in the Indians close victory against Central Magnet. He was one of four players with a multi-hit game in the regional semifinal game. Owen’s hot streak didn’t stop there. He was one of the few bright spots during Montgomery Central’s regional championship loss to Greenbrier High. Owen was perfect from the plate, and he accounted for three of the team’s eight hits.

Owen also came to play in the Indians’ biggest game of the year. With a state tournament appearance on the line, the catcher went 3 for 3 once again. During his four at-bats, he accounted for three runs battled in. This was critical, because Montgomery County only won by three runs.

2022 overview

Montgomery Central kicked off their postseason campaign on May 9. At that point, Owen had a batting average of .288. According to Game Changer. he has since raised it to an efficient .352.

“Eric has been quite a leader for our team and has been on a tear during the post season,” said Montgomery Central head coach Todd Dunn. “It’s almost to the point where we expect for him to get at least a double when he comes to the plate. He became one of our most clutch hitters during the 2022 season. ”

Statistics show just how big of an impact Owen has on the Indians’ overall offensive production. He is ranked first in categories such as at-bats, hits, runs batted in, batting average and sac flies.

One of the more eye-opening numbers is the amount of RBI’s he has on the season. Owen has 26 RBI’s on the year, while the next closest sits at 13.

Dunn also recognized Owen for his ability in the field and how he handles the pitching rotation. He complimented Owen’s “calm and positive demeanor,” and how much of an impact his presence has had on their staff.

Montgomery Central is scheduled to face Covington High in the opening round of the state tournament on Tuesday. The game is set to begin at 6:30 pm as the Indians look to extend their postseason run.
