ROME, Ga. – As the sun set at the Rome Tennis Center Thursday night, Georgia Tech women’s tennis collected a 4-0 victory over Boston College to advance to quarterfinal action. The Yellow Jackets took the doubles point and three straight-set singles victories for the win.
Georgia Tech (14-9) dominated doubles play, racing out with leads on all three courts. Tech’s No. 5-ranked doubles pairing of Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura wrapped up first, reversing a 2-1 BC advantage by No. 35 Marice Aguiar and Laura Lopez into a 5-2 lead. The Jackets broke the Eagles to seal the win, 6-2.
The doubles point and early lead was clinched from the two spot where No. 44 Kylie Bilchev and Ava Hrastar took control of Sophia Edwards and Hailey Wilcox. Opening with a 4-2 lead, Hrastar served out the match for a 6-3 victory to clinch the early match lead.
Courts four and five finished within minutes of each other in singles action, giving the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 match lead. Gia Cohen added a point to the scoreboard first, downing Stephanie Sanchez, 6-3, 6-3, on court five. Cohen opened with a 4-3 advantage in the first set and took the final two games to gain a set advantage, but Sanchez grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second set. The Jacket rallied back to knot the set and seal the win, 6-3, 6-3.
Competing on the next court, Mahak Jain put Tech on the verge of victory, picking up a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Natasha Irani. Without dropping a game in the first set, Jain took a 3-0 lead in the second before Irani battled back to knot it at 3-all. But the Jacket won the final three games to give Georgia Tech a 3-0 match lead.
