Elaine Denise Messier O’Brien Obituary

Elaine Denise Messier O’Brien, 82, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, after a period of failing health. She departed peacefully at her Cornerstone at Hampton home, with her beloved and dedicated husband of 50 years, Paul Francis O’Brien, by her side. Elaine was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island on May 29, 1940 to Rita and Maurice Messier. She resided in Lexington, Massachusetts and then retired to Portsmouth, New Hampshire for nearly the last 20 years. Elaine is survived by her husband, Paul, her son, Hector (Mei-Jung Lu) and her brother, Michel (Marguerite), sister, Rachel (David Auclair,) brother, Paul (Diane); also her beloved grandchildren, Natalie and Angelina. Elaine was predeceased by a brother, Maurice, (Rita) a sister, Jeanne and another sister, Simone. Elaine also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. Elaine graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1957. She attended the University of Maine, and then obtained an Associate’s degree in nursing at Newton Junior College. She studied at Suffolk University getting a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. Elaine received her Master’s degree in Health Education from Boston University. Elaine also received a certificate in medical coding. She pursued several different careers throughout her long working life. She was a public health nurse, working in several hospitals and nursing homes. Later she was a Health Education teacher at the high school level. Elaine performed medical coding and quality assurance at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, MA. Elaine had a passion for life-long education and continued to take classes late into her life. She had interests and took coursework in: computers and art, computer-generated art and Buddhism. Elaine was an avid Mah-jongg competitor, a member of the Red Hatters club and also belonged to the singing group: Voices from the Heart. Elaine was a voracious reader, an avid movie-goer, puzzle-master and lover of travel. A private memorial for the family is planned. She will be buried in the Messier Family plot, in Pawtucket, RI, in a private burial.
