Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed Wanda’s connection to witchcraft. But it may have also teased that path for another hero.
While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness focused on its titular hero, there was equal importance placed on Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). From WandaVision to this film, she has shown massive growth in her power and an understanding of her connection to witchcraft, helping her become the Scarlet Witch. But as she used the Darkhold to expand her power and find the family she created and gave up, she was corrupted by darkness. Now, as an enemy to Doctor Strange, she used her powers to find the origin of the Darkhold, which may have teased a return and tragic future for one WandaVision character.
Through her hex, Wanda created her children, Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne). But when she had to dismantle it, she lost her boys. Driven by a desire to get them back and corrupted by the Darkhold, she got taken to Mount Wundagore in Multiverse of Madness to finish her plan of venturing through the multiverse to find and be with her children. However, the prophecy surrounding the Scarlet Witch was already carved in the sides of Wundagore. And TikToker, superheronexus, also discovered a statue of what appears to be an adult Billy near his mother, which could have massive implications for his character.
In WandaVision, Billy exhibited powers of premonition and reality-bending, though nowhere near as strong as his mother. Nevertheless, he quickly showed promise with his abilities and put him on a path to embrace the Wiccan persona he had in the comics. But like Wanda, Billy had his own prophecy that would change him forever. That said, with the MCU being its own entity, its future could be far more dangerous than the one he had in comics.
When Billy embraced his role as Wiccan and Wanda’s son in the books, he learned that he would eventually become the Demiurge, a powerful being that gave birth to the Elder Gods. As a natural life force, it was a future Billy never avoided nor feared, as it didn’t have corruptive qualities. However, his destiny hasn’t been fulfilled in the comics.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe may have teased it’s not done with Billy, as the adult version of him could mean that if Wanda failed to rule all there is for Chthon, Billy could be the next target to do so. With similar powers to his mother, one of the many Billys in the multiverse could awaken their abilities and terrorize all realities. However, like in the comics, he could also be reincarnated and hide his lineage until the time was right. Like Wanda, the limits to Billy’s powers have yet to get fully explored, but they’re just as devastating.
While Wanda’s darkest days may be behind her, there’s still the evil that compelled her to turn on her friends. Chthon and Wanda have had a strong history in comics, as he was supposedly one to grant her power over magic as an infant. Should the MCU follow a similar storyline, which could mean that Chthon may try again with her son. But with Billy no longer in the MCU, this could prophesize a grand return of Wanda’s children or another painful loss. Either way, one thing that Multiverse of Madness has shown is that, in the end, there must always be a Billy and Tommy.
To see Billy’s future teased, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently playing in theaters.
