Desert Edge football future in the hands of freshman QB Hezekiah Millender

They call him Buddha, which in Eastern philosophy, is known as the awakened one.

At Goodyear Desert Edge, it means it’s time for freshman quarterback Hezekiah Millender to lead the offense.

He has been anointed the successor to four-year starting quarterback Adryan Lara, who set every passing record at the school.

That’s a tough act to follow.

But “Buddha” is ready.

He’s been getting the first-team reps in spring football practices under the watch of co-head coaches Mark and Marcus Carter, twins who got to work with Lara the last two years of his record-season prep career, before being bound for Kansas State .

Already, Millender is showing off a cannon arm and an ability to read defenses and take off with it. He’s giving the Scorpions now a dimension that they didn’t have with Lara, capable of making big plays with his legs.
