Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe says he does not want to hear any more celebrity opinions on Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards.
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is tired of hearing celebrity opinions on Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards.
During an interview with Good Morning Britain, the subject of Smith slapping Rock came up. Radcliffe said, “I’m just so already dramatically bored of hearing people’s opinions about it that I just do not want to be another opinion adding to it.”
However, Radcliffe did note that he’d experienced jokes being made about him at award ceremonies, saying he was never quite sure if the joke was at his expense or not. Because of that, he said, “You sort of have a mode of just being like ‘I’ll just keep smiling and laughing and maybe it”ll end soon.”
At the 94th Academy Awards, Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, saying he was excited to see her in GI Jane 2. Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia and wore her hair short for the event. In response, Will Smith took the stage and slapped Rock. He then returned to his seat and told the comedian to “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.” Later that night, Smith won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Richard Williams King Richarda biopic focusing on the family of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams.
Following the slap, a number of different Hollywood celebrities came out both for and against Smith. For example, while Janet Hubert – who played Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air – supported her on-screen nephew, comedian Jim Carrey condemned the slap, saying it “sickened” him. In response to the event, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences launched a formal review of Smith’s behavior and condemned the actor. Smith, for his part, has apologized, saying that act was “not indicative of the man I want to be.”
Radcliffe is an actor best known for his role as the titular wizard in the Harry Potter franchise. Outside of that blockbuster series, Radcliffe has had roles in 2016’s Swiss Army Man and 2019’s Guns Akimbo. Radcliffe has also appeared in numerous TV shows, including BoJack Horseman and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. His most recent part saw him playing Abigail Fairfax in The Lost City.
Also starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, The Lost City is in theaters now.
