The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds will begin their 2022 seasons at the Great American Ball Park on Thursday, April 7. The Braves will attempt to become the first repeat World Series winner in more than two decades, while the Reds are beginning a rebuild that will almost certainly leave them outside the playoff picture. The pitching matchup will feature Braves southpaw Max Fried going up against Reds righty Tyler Mahle.

The Braves and Reds have sparred five times on Opening Day dating back to the former’s move to Atlanta. Yet the two sides have seldom met in recent years, with their last Opening Day matchup coming in 2001. (A Braves win, it should be noted.) As is tradition, the Reds will be hosting Opening Day.

Storylines

Braves: The Braves are attempting to become MLB’s first repeat champions since the New York Yankees more than two decades ago. Atlanta had a busy offseason, with the most notable move being their decision to acquire Matt Olson from the Athletics, thereby moving on from Freddie Freeman and signaling a change of guard at first base. The Braves also inked longtime Los Angeles Dodgers closer to Kenley Jansen, and retained postseason hero Eddie Rosario.

Reds: As we mentioned in the introduction, the Reds are a team in transition. They traded or shed several notable names over the offseason, including Nick Castellanos, Sonny Gray, Jesse Winker, Eugenio Suárez, Wade Miley, and Amir Garrett. Cincy did add a few names folks will recognize to its roster, such as veteran outfielder Tommy Pham and DH Colin Moran. The Reds will be without Luis Castillo to start the season, which explains why Mahle is getting the nod. The odds are that the Reds will end up on the outside looking in during the playoffs.
